British Columbia Supportive, Financially-Responsible Government

British Columbia recognizes and values the benefits of a stable economy. Strong fiscal management and investments in the province’s future are two of the ways that we maintain our hard-earned reputation as a safe harbor for investments.

Balancing The Budget
British Columbia is legally obliged to balance its budget, a requirement that directly supports British Columbia’s AAA credit rating.

British Columbia’s plan to maintain vital public services while reducing expenditures is included in the annual budget.

Investing In The Future
From 2016 through 2019, spending on health, education, skills training, transportation, and public safety infrastructure will total more than $20.6 billion. This includes

  • $3.1 billion in transportation investment including rail and road developments.
  • $2.9 billion in health care infrastructure to support and improve health care facilities across British Columbia.
  • $2.5 billion for post-secondary institutions to further strengthen British Columbia’s world-leading universities, colleges, and technology institutes.
  • Examples of British Columbia’s research and innovation investments:
    • The British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund has invested almost $415 million to provide capital funding for research infrastructure at public post-secondary institutions, teaching hospitals and affiliated non-profit agencies.
    • The Michael Smith Foundation has received $275 million for health research.
    • More than $152.5 million has been invested in Genome BC to spearhead world-class DNA research projects in health, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining, bio-energy and the environment, including climate change.
    • The Leading Edge Endowment Fund has received more than $56 million to establish 20 permanent research chairs.
    • $40.5 million has been invested in the Vancouver-based Centre for Digital Media, a Centre of Excellence that trains experts for this growing industry. The digital media and the wireless sector employs more than 16,500 people in British Columbia and has annual revenues of $3 billion.
